Sandstone rock towns, castles on rocks and short distances. Český ráj is the oldest protected landscape area in Czechia (1955).

The Český ráj (Bohemian Paradise) Protected Landscape Area was declared on 1 March 1955 and is the oldest protected landscape area in Czechia. It covers 182 km² between Turnov, Jičín and Mnichovo Hradiště.

It is known for its sandstone rock towns – such as Prachovské skály, 5–7 km north-west of Jičín – and its castles on rocks: Trosky, the symbol of the Bohemian Paradise and a National Cultural Monument, Valdštejn and Hrubá Skála château.

    How we chose

    • Bohemian Paradise is a tourist area, not an administrative region, so it has no official border. We draw it as an area around one reference point (between Turnov and Trosky).
    • Facts such as areas, dates and rules come from official bodies and Wikipedia. Each one is in the source list below, with the date we last checked it.
    • Stay DNA and the “Know before you go” panel are our editorial estimates, compared with the other places in the atlas. They are not measurements or visitor ratings.
    • We name no individual hosts, and nobody pays to be included.
