Region
South Bohemia
Fishponds · Rural Baroque · Vltava · Cycling
A land of fishponds, Renaissance towns and low horizons. A flat centre for cycling, the Novohradské hory to the south and Šumava to the west.
On the tourist map of Czechia, South Bohemia is the most “watery” region: the fishpond systems of the Třeboň area, the Vltava running from Šumava through Krumlov, and Lipno – the largest body of water in the country. In between lie Renaissance towns and villages of rural Baroque architecture.
As a base we recommend Třeboň (flat land, spa, cycling) or Český Krumlov (a town, a river, Šumava on the doorstep). The region has three UNESCO sites: the historic centre of Český Krumlov, Holašovice and – reaching into Vysočina – Telč.

How we chose
- South Bohemia is a tourist area, not an administrative region, so it has no official border. We draw it as an area around one reference point (reference point between České Budějovice and Třeboň).
- Facts such as areas, dates and rules come from official bodies and Wikipedia. Each one is in the source list below, with the date we last checked it.
- Stay DNA and the “Know before you go” panel are our editorial estimates, compared with the other places in the atlas. They are not measurements or visitor ratings.
- We name no individual hosts, and nobody pays to be included.
