Things to do in Třeboň
Château · Brewery · Tomb · Dams
Třeboň does not have dozens of attractions. It has about ten, and you can reach all of them on foot or by bike. Here they are, in order of how well they tell you where you are.
In town
Masarykovo náměstí
Renaissance and Baroque houses with arcades. On the south side the Zlatá hvězda complex, on the west side the château. The whole square is pedestrianised and at its loveliest in the evening.
Třeboň Château
One of the largest château complexes in Czechia – more than a hundred residential rooms. It is owned by the state and managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ). Guided tours usually run Tuesday to Sunday; routes and times change with the season.
Třeboň Nature House
The visitor centre of the protected landscape area and biosphere reserve in the château grounds, opened in 2010 as the first Nature House (Dům přírody) in Czechia. The exhibition Krajina a lidé (“Landscape and People”) explains how the fishponds came about and what lives in them. In winter it opens only on some days and it is not step-free.
Regent Brewery
Founded in 1379. Today’s buildings are mostly from the second half of the 19th century, on the site of the armoury of Petr Vok z Rožmberka. The tour takes about 70 minutes and ends in the cellars (around 6 °C) with a tasting of unfiltered beer. The brewery also runs night tours by torchlight – dates on the brewery’s website.
Walls and gates
The fortifications from the late 14th century survive best along the Zlatá stoka canal opposite Bertiny lázně. Walk through Komenského sady (the park along the canal) and along the promenade on Tylova street to the Jindřichohradecká gate.
By the water
The Svět dam
A kilometre from the square. 1,400 m along the dam of a fishpond that lies exactly on the 49th parallel.
The Schwarzenberg Tomb
A neo-Gothic building from 1874–1877 in the park south-east of Svět, just under 2 km from the square. It holds 26 coffins. Since November 2021 it has been managed by a foundation. Tours follow a seasonal schedule – in summer Tuesday to Sunday, in winter on selected days only.
Rožmberk
The largest fishpond in Czechia, 6 km to the north. Dam 2,355 m. Best by bike on the Rožmberk nature trail (22 km). The fishponds around Třeboň
Spa
Besides treatment stays, Bertiny lázně and Lázně Aurora also offer one-off treatments, a sauna world and pools. Aqua viva at Aurora is open to the public as well. Guide to the spa
