The Třeboň spa

Peat · Musculoskeletal · Wellness

Třeboň is an official spa town, and its treatments use peat (slatina) – fen peat from the surrounding bogs warmed to body temperature. Its two spa houses belong to the town and, besides treatment, also offer short stays just for rest.

What peat is

The Třeboň basin is one of the richest deposits of peat and fen peat in Czechia. Once extracted, the peat (slatina) is cleaned of coarse matter, crushed, mixed with water and warmed to 37–39 °C. It is then applied as a wrap, or diluted further for a bath.

Peat belongs to the group of so-called peloids and works mainly through heat. It is dense and conducts heat about seven times more slowly than water – so the body warms up more gently, but deeper. Třeboň therefore specialises in the musculoskeletal system: back and joint pain, recovery after injuries and operations, rheumatic conditions.

The spa tradition began in 1881–1883, when the teacher Václav Hucek built a treatment institute using peat. Bertiny lázně is named after his daughter Berta.

Two spa houses

Both houses are owned by the town and run by the town company Slatinné lázně Třeboň s. r. o.

Who pays: comprehensive, contributory, self-paying

Spa rehabilitation care (lázeňská léčebně rehabilitační péče) paid from Czech public health insurance comes in two forms. For both, a doctor must issue a proposal and the health insurance company must approve it.

  • Comprehensive care (komplexní péče) – the insurer pays for examinations, treatments, accommodation and meals at the standard level. Extras (a single room, a TV, a fridge) cost more.
  • Contributory care (příspěvková péče) – the insurer pays for examinations and treatments. You pay for accommodation, meals and travel yourself.
  • Self-paying treatment stay – you pay for everything, no proposal needed. The Třeboň spa offers them from 6 nights.

With care covered by insurance you cannot sleep anywhere other than at the spa establishment – it counts as follow-up inpatient care.

Wellness without a prescription

If you do not need treatment, you can come to Třeboň for a shorter wellness stay. Both houses sell packages as well as individual treatments (peat wrap, massages, bubble bath) and entry to the pools and saunas. The spa also issues a multi-purpose gift voucher.

The general differences between a spa stay and a wellness stay are explained in How spa accommodation works.

Health comes first

This text is not medical advice. Whether peat or any other treatment is suitable for you is for a doctor to decide – on treatment stays, the spa doctor at your initial examination. The spa publishes indications and contraindications on its website.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

For spa care covered by health insurance, yes – a doctor writes a proposal (návrh) and the health insurance company approves it. Self-paying and wellness stays you book yourself.

Can I have a treatment stay and sleep somewhere else?

Not with care covered by health insurance – it counts as follow-up inpatient care, and staying at the spa establishment is a condition.

Are the pools only for spa guests?

The Aqua viva centre at Lázně Aurora is open to the public too. The spa publishes current opening on its website.

How we chose

  • We wrote about Třeboň because it works as a base for a stay: there is somewhere to sleep, something to do on foot or by bike, and a way to get there.
  • Facts such as areas, dates and rules come from official bodies and Wikipedia. Each one is in the source list below, with the date we last checked it.
  • We name no individual hosts, and nobody pays to be included.
