Třeboň · Rest
A relaxing weekend in Třeboň
Spa · Silence · Park
Třeboň can be wonderfully slow. All it takes is two things: book a treatment in advance and book nothing else.
What to book in advance
Just two things: a spa treatment and your accommodation. Peat wraps, massages and bubble baths have limited capacity and fill up at weekends. Besides treatment stays, both spas sell shorter wellness packages and individual treatments.
A programme without a programme
- Peat wrap. Peat warmed to 37–39 °C heats you more gently than water – it conducts heat about seven times more slowly.
- The spa park by Aurora. A golf course, wooden sculptures, benches looking out over Svět.
- Aurora’s lookout tower. A lift to the 10th floor; on a clear day, the Novohradské hory and Kleť.
- The Svět dam at dusk. 1,400 metres of slow walking.
- Komenského sady. The Zlatá stoka canal, the town walls, little bridges.
If you come by car, leave it parked all weekend. Everything above is within two kilometres of the square.
Where to stay
For a quiet weekend, stay in the spa itself – treatments, pool and meals under one roof – or in the historic core in a room facing the courtyard, not the square. The area around Bertiny lázně is a compromise: the calm of the park and five minutes to the square.
48 hours: Třeboň
A slow pace, water, evenings on the square and one morning at the spa.
Friday
-
Arrival
By train to Třeboň main station or the Třeboň lázně stop; by car on road 24 from České Budějovice. From either, the square is a ten- to fifteen-minute walk.
-
Dinner near the square
Masarykovo náměstí and its arcades. Look for carp on the menu – “Třeboňský kapr” (Třeboň carp) has been an EU protected geographical indication since 2007.
-
The Svět dam at dusk≈ 1 km
The dam of the Svět fishpond is a kilometre from the square and 1,400 m long. In the evening it is at its quietest.
Saturday
-
Breakfast
If you are staying at a guesthouse, ask in advance whether breakfast is served on Saturdays too – at smaller places it is not a given.
-
Cycling round Svět≈ 11 km
The “Cesta kolem Světa” loop (literally “round the world”) is roughly 11 km, through a park, a peat bog and pine forest. Flat – anyone can manage it.
-
Lunch
South-east side of Svět: the Schwarzenberg Tomb in the park is just a few minutes from the dam.
-
The spa
Bertiny lázně and Lázně Aurora also sell shorter wellness stays and day entry. Book your slot in advance.
-
Regent Brewery
A brewery founded in 1379. After dark it runs tours by candle and torchlight – check the dates on the brewery’s website.
Sunday
-
The château and its park
The Renaissance château on Masarykovo náměstí is managed by the National Heritage Institute. Tours usually run Tuesday to Sunday.
-
Rožmberk from the dam≈ 6 km
The largest fishpond in Czechia, with a 2,355 m dam. About 6 km north of Třeboň, easy to reach by bike.
-
Departure
By train via Veselí nad Lužnicí, or on the direct fast train to Prague.
Short distances, water, wildlife in the landscape and a plan B under a roof.
Friday
-
Arrival
By train to Třeboň main station or the Třeboň lázně stop; by car on road 24 from České Budějovice. From either, the square is a ten- to fifteen-minute walk.
-
Dinner and a short walk
The square is pedestrianised and safe. The gates and town walls are a good first way for children to find their bearings.
Saturday
-
Třeboň Nature House
The protected landscape area’s visitor centre in the château grounds, with the exhibition “Landscape and People” and its hands-on tasks. Note: the exhibition is not step-free and cannot be visited with a pushchair; opening is limited in winter.
-
The beach at the Opatovický fishpond≈ 1 km
On the northern edge of the pond there is a holiday centre with a small beach, about a kilometre from the centre.
-
Lunch and a rest
A short midday break – after a morning by the water, children need one anyway.
-
Pool and water park at Aurora
The Aqua viva centre and Třeboň Water World (opened in 2023) at Lázně Aurora are open to the public too. The water slide is only for children aged 12 and over.
-
The little train round Svět
In season a sightseeing road train runs from the spa across the Svět dam to the square. Check the timetable locally.
Sunday
-
A short bike loop≈ 11 km
The flat Cesta kolem Světa (≈ 11 km) is ideal even with a child seat or a trailer.
-
Lunch
Fish soup or carp – the Třeboň area is the centre of Czech fishpond farming.
-
Departure
Direct trains to Prague run only a few times a day – check in IDOS, the Czech journey planner.
Two days in the saddle along dams and canals. Flat, but the kilometres add up.
Friday
-
Arrival
By train to Třeboň main station or the Třeboň lázně stop; by car on road 24 from České Budějovice. From either, the square is a ten- to fifteen-minute walk.
-
Getting the bikes ready
Třeboň main station has bike storage and hire for bikes and scooters. Bikes can also travel by train.
Saturday
-
The Okolo Třeboně nature trail39 km
A 39 km loop with 22 stops, starting on the Svět dam: the Opatovický fishpond, the Zlatá stoka canal, the Chlum fishponds, Stará Hlína and the southern tip of Rožmberk. Part of it is gravel – a touring or mountain bike is better.
-
Lunch in Stará Hlína
Halfway round. From here you can see the Rožmberk dam.
-
Recovery
Sauna or pool at the spa, or just your feet in the water at the Opatovický beach.
Sunday
-
South to Nové Hrady≈ 24 km as the crow flies
Along the Rožmberk Heritage Greenway towards Nové Hrady (a castle above the town near the Austrian border). Back by train from České Velenice or the same way.
-
Departure
Bikes on trains: look for the bicycle symbol in the timetable.
No minute-by-minute plan. Spa, park, water and nothing you have to fit in.
Friday
-
Arrival
By train to Třeboň main station or the Třeboň lázně stop; by car on road 24 from České Budějovice. From either, the square is a ten- to fifteen-minute walk.
-
A light dinner
Early to bed. Třeboň is a quiet town even on a Saturday night.
Saturday
-
A long breakfast
Třeboň does not wake up early, and that is a good thing.
-
Peat wrap
The peat is warmed to 37–39 °C and conducts heat about seven times more slowly than water, so it warms you gently. Both spas offer the treatment.
-
The spa park at Aurora
A park with wooden sculptures, a golf course and a view of Svět. Take a book to a bench.
-
Aurora’s lookout tower
A lift to the 10th floor; on a clear day the view reaches the Novohradské hory and Kleť.
Sunday
-
Komenského sady and the town walls
A short walk along the Zlatá stoka canal and the town walls.
-
Lunch and departure
No rush.
Dams, forests and short distances. What to check in advance so that a weekend with your dog does not end at a closed door.
Friday
-
Arriving by train with a dog
On Czech Railways (ČD) trains a dog travels in 2nd class, muzzled and on a short lead, with a dog ticket. A small dog in a closed carrier travels free.
-
Dinner outdoors
In summer a terrace is easiest. Ask about indoor seating – rules differ from place to place.
Saturday
-
The dam in the morning
The Svět dam is almost empty in the morning. The waterbirds on the ponds are a reason to keep your dog on a lead – the Třeboň area is a Special Protection Area for birds.
-
Forests around St Vitus’ Chapel
Pine woods by smaller fishponds not far from Bertiny lázně – shade even in summer.
-
A rest
Slow down on hot afternoons. Dogs suffer more than people on sun-baked dams.
-
Round the Opatovický fishpond
The dam is 1,177 m long and joins the nature trail.
Sunday
-
A short walk and departure
The spa complexes and swimming areas are not for dogs – plan an outdoor weekend.
Třeboň has enough roofs for a whole wet weekend.
Friday
-
Arrival
By train to Třeboň main station or the Třeboň lázně stop; by car on road 24 from České Budějovice. From either, the square is a ten- to fifteen-minute walk.
-
Dinner under the arcades
Masarykovo náměstí is lined with arcades all the way round – you can cross it without getting wet.
Saturday
-
Třeboň Château
Guided tour routes (National Heritage Institute). Check times and seasonal restrictions on the château’s website.
-
Nature House
In the château grounds. Watch out for winter opening – open on certain days only.
-
Regent Brewery
The tour takes about 70 minutes and goes down into the cellars, which stay at about 6 °C all year. Bring a jumper.
-
Pool or sauna
Aqua viva and the water park at Aurora – warm water while it pours outside.
Sunday
-
The Schwarzenberg Tomb
A neo-Gothic tomb from 1874–1877 in the park by Svět. Tours run on a seasonal schedule – outside summer only on selected days.
-
Departure
If it clears up, stop at the Rožmberk dam on the way.
Showing plan: For two.
Times are suggestions, not opening hours. Check each place’s website before you travel.

How we chose
- We wrote about Třeboň because it works as a base for a stay: there is somewhere to sleep, something to do on foot or by bike, and a way to get there.
- Facts such as areas, dates and rules come from official bodies and Wikipedia. Each one is in the source list below, with the date we last checked it.
- We name no individual hosts, and nobody pays to be included.
Sources (2) checked on
- Slatinné lázně Třeboň – official website (in Czech)
- Třeboň spa – Wikipedia (in Czech) – peat, the park by Aurora, lookout tower
