A Renaissance town on the Zlatá stoka canal, wedged between the Svět and Rožmberk fishponds. Nobody comes here to tick things off. People come to cycle along the dams, for a peat wrap at the spa, for carp, and for the evenings when the sky opens up over the water.

Why go
Třeboň is a small town – about 8,300 people – and the whole point of it lies beyond the town walls. To the north and south stretches a landscape built by fishpond engineers from the late 15th century onwards: Štěpánek Netolický, then Mikuláš Ruthard z Malešova and Jakub Krčín. The result is a network of fishponds and canals that UNESCO designated a biosphere reserve in 1977; three years later it became the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area (chráněná krajinná oblast, CHKO), covering 687 km².
For you that means three things. Flat ground – across the whole protected area the altitude only ranges between 406 and 541 metres, so anyone can manage it by bike. Water – the Svět fishpond begins right outside the walls, and 6 km to the north lies Rožmberk, the largest fishpond in the country. And peace: Třeboň is not a day-trip town in the way Český Krumlov is. In the evening you can hear your own footsteps on the square.
Who Třeboň is not for: anyone after mountains, nightlife or something scheduled for every hour. For everyone else it is one of the best places in Czechia for a slow weekend.
Where to stay
The town is so small that almost every address is “in the centre”. What matters more is what you want outside your window:
| Area | What’s there | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Historic core | Masarykovo náměstí (the main square), the château, the brewery | Couples, short stays, no car |
| Around Bertiny lázně | spa park, the Zlatá stoka canal, Třeboň lázně stop | Spa, peace, arriving by train |
| Beyond the Svět dam (Aurora) | spa park, pools, golf | Families, wellness |
| Surrounding villages (Stará Hlína, Lutová, Chlum) | fishponds, farmsteads, isolated houses | Cycling, cottages, with a dog |
For the details – including what to ask your host – read Where to stay in Třeboň. If you are looking for a room with local people, read Private rooms.
What to see and do
- Masarykovo náměstí and its arcades – Renaissance and Baroque houses, pedestrianised.
- Třeboň Château – one of the largest château complexes in Czechia, with more than a hundred residential rooms. It is managed by the National Heritage Institute (Národní památkový ústav, NPÚ), and its grounds also house the Třeboň Nature House (Dům přírody Třeboňska).
- Regent Brewery – founded in 1379. Tours last about 70 minutes and lead into cellars that stay at around 6 °C all year.
- The Schwarzenberg Tomb – a neo-Gothic building from 1874–1877 in the park south-east of Svět, just under 2 km from the square.
- The Svět dam – 1,400 metres of dam where the whole town gathers in the evening.
- Rožmberk – a dam 2,355 m long; the fishpond was built in 1584–1590 to a design by Jakub Krčín.
Everything, with opening times and suggestions on the order to see things, is in Things to do in Třeboň.
Food
In the Třeboň area, eat fish. Třeboňský kapr (Třeboň carp) has been an EU protected geographical indication since 2007, and Czechia had already protected it under that name since 1974. Carp is served fried, roasted in butter, as fish soup, or as fish fingers and burgers. With carp goes beer from the local brewery, whose courtyard has a beer fountain restored in 2013.
We do not recommend specific restaurants yet. We have not visited them systematically and do not want to pass on second-hand tips.
Getting there
By car it is about 139 km from Prague (the I/3 and D3), and 22 km from České Budějovice on road 24. By train on line 226, Veselí nad Lužnicí – České Velenice; the town has two stations, the main station in the north and the Třeboň lázně stop by Bertiny lázně. A direct fast train runs from Prague several times a day; other services involve a change at Veselí. By bus it is about half an hour from České Budějovice.
In detail: from Prague, from České Budějovice, from Český Krumlov and Třeboň without a car.

-
Dinner outdoors
In summer a terrace is easiest. Ask about indoor seating – rules differ from place to place.
Saturday

Frequently asked questions
How many days do I need for Třeboň?
A weekend is enough for the town and one bike loop. If you want Rožmberk, the Nové Hrady area and the spa as well, allow three to four nights.
Can I get to Třeboň by train from Prague without changing?
Yes. Since 2019 a direct fast train has run from Prague to Třeboň several times a day, stopping both at the main station and at the Třeboň lázně stop. Other services involve a change at Veselí nad Lužnicí. IDOS, the Czech journey planner, shows current times.
When is Třeboň busiest?
During the summer school holidays and on fish-harvest weekends (October). It is quietest from November to March, though some attractions then run a reduced schedule.
Is the peat wrap only for spa patients?
No. Besides treatment stays, both spas offer shorter wellness stays and individual treatments. It is best to book in advance.
Is the Rožmberk fish harvest taking place in 2026?
No. Rybářství Třeboň, the local fishery, has announced that the ceremonial Rožmberk harvest will not take place in 2026 because of an unfavourable water balance. Instead it is holding “Days with the Třeboň fishermen” on 16 and 17 October 2026.
