Třeboň with a dog

Dams · Forests · Lead · Train

Kilometres of dams, pine forests and few cars. The Třeboň area is wonderful for dogs – but it is also a bird protection area, and that changes the rules of the game.

Updated

Where to go with a dog

  • The Svět dam – 1,400 m along the dam, almost empty in the morning.
  • Cesta kolem Světa – about 11 km through a park, a peat bog and woodland.
  • The woods around St Vitus’ Chapel – shade in summer, by smaller fishponds not far from Bertiny lázně.
  • The Opatovický fishpond dam – 1,177 m, joining the nature trail.
  • Rožmberk – a 2,355 m dam, ideal for a longer outing.

Rules and consideration

Bird protection area. The Třeboň area is a Special Protection Area for birds (ptačí oblast) and an Important Bird Area. Waterbirds nest and rest on the fishponds. Keep your dog on a lead on the dams, in the reeds and by the banks, especially from spring to summer, when the birds are nesting.

  • Follow the signs on the ground for the rules in individual nature reserves.
  • Fish harvests: during harvests the dams are full of crowds, machinery and fish. Your dog belongs on a short lead – or better, at home.
  • Heat: tarmac and dams get very hot in summer. Walk in the morning and evening.
  • Ticks and mosquitoes: a fishpond landscape has both. Sort out parasite protection with your vet before you travel.

By train with a dog

On Czech Railways (ČD) trains:

  • the dog travels in 2nd class, muzzled and on a short lead,
  • you pay a dog ticket priced by distance,
  • a small dog in a closed carrier travels free as long as the carrier does not take up a seat,
  • guide dogs and assistance dogs travel free.

Where to stay with a dog

Every host sets their own rules for dogs. Ask specifically:

  1. How much, and is it per night or per stay?
  2. Can the dog stay in the room alone?
  3. Is it allowed in the dining room or at breakfast?
  4. Is the garden fenced?
  5. Is there somewhere nearby to run without cars?

Frequently asked questions

Can a dog go to the spa or a swimming area?

Spa complexes, pools and the water park are not for dogs. Plan outdoor activities and set aside time for the spa when someone else can stay with the dog.

How much is a dog ticket on the train?

On Czech Railways (České dráhy), a dog not in a carrier needs its own ticket priced by distance. A small dog in a closed carrier travels free. The current fares are on cd.cz.

How we chose

  • We wrote about Třeboň because it works as a base for a stay: there is somewhere to sleep, something to do on foot or by bike, and a way to get there.
  • Facts such as areas, dates and rules come from official bodies and Wikipedia. Each one is in the source list below, with the date we last checked it.
  • We name no individual hosts, and nobody pays to be included.
