Staying with a dog
Dog · National parks · Train
“Dogs welcome” means something different everywhere. In some places the dog may sleep on the bed, in others only in the hall. And national parks have their own rules.
Questions for your host
- How much, and for what? Per night or per stay? Is a cleaning deposit required?
- Where is the dog allowed? Room, bed, sofa, dining room, garden?
- Can it be left alone? In the room, in the car, nowhere?
- Size and number of dogs: some places have a limit.
- Fencing: is the garden enclosed?
- Surroundings: can you walk straight out into nature, or along a road first?
- Other animals: pet cats, hens, sheep on a farm?
National parks
| Park | Rule for dogs |
|---|---|
| Bohemian Switzerland (České Švýcarsko) | the law forbids domestic animals from roaming free anywhere in the national park outside the built-up areas of villages |
| Krkonoše | dogs may not run loose – they must stay within reach and under command; the administration recommends a lead, particularly near pastures |
| Šumava | dogs must be under constant control so as not to disturb wildlife |
| Podyjí | follow the signs and the park administration’s rules |
Stricter rules apply on the Polish side of Krkonoše – dogs must be on a lead.
By train
On Czech Railways (ČD) a dog travels in 2nd class, muzzled and on a short lead, with a ticket priced by distance. A small dog in a closed carrier travels free.
Where to go with a dog
According to the editorial Stay DNA Dogs score (see how the score is made), the friendliest destinations are Vysočina, the Třeboň area, the Bohemian Paradise, the Beskydy and the Jeseníky – lots of space, few cars and fewer restrictions than in the strictest zones of the national parks.
