Where to stay in Třeboň
Centre · Spa · Villages · Remote houses
In Třeboň, distance from the square does not matter – you can cross the whole town in twenty minutes. What matters is whether you want to wake up to church bells, the ducks on Svět, or nothing at all.
Four Třeboňs
1. The historic core
Masarykovo náměstí with its arcades, the château, the brewery and the town walls. You stay in the middle of a protected historic town reserve: in the morning you step out onto the square, and in the evening nobody has to drive. By bike you are on the Svět dam in five minutes.
Good for: couples, a first visit, arriving by train. Watch out for: parking in the core is often limited – ask exactly where you will leave the car.
2. The spa quarter around Berta
Bertiny lázně lies on the Zlatá stoka canal, just outside the walls. Around it are the spa park, the promenade along Tylova street and the Třeboň lázně railway stop. Quieter than the square, but still within walking distance of everything.
Good for: spa visits, stays without a car, older travellers.
3. Beyond the Svět dam (Aurora and Hliník)
Lázně Aurora, a golf course, the Aqua viva pools and Třeboň Water World. This is an outlying, mostly residential part of town, but with a park and a view of the fishpond. It is roughly a twenty-minute walk to the centre across the dam.
Good for: families, wellness, anyone who wants a pool round the corner.
4. Villages and remote houses round about
Stará and Nová Hlína by Rožmberk, Lutová, Chlum u Třeboně, Lomnice nad Lužnicí. Farmsteads, cottages, guesthouses by the fishponds. Morning mist over the water and pheasants in the fields – but without a car or a bike you will not get far from here.
Good for: cyclists, families staying a week, stays with a dog, a group renting a cottage.
Tip: Distances in the Třeboň area are short. Stará Hlína is about 5 km from the square, Lomnice nad Lužnicí about 10 km (as the crow flies). For a week of cycling, a village by a fishpond often makes a better base than the centre.
What type of accommodation
| Type | What to expect in Třeboň | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Guesthouse (penzion) | 5–20 rooms, no restaurant, often breakfast | Breakfast at weekends? Bike storage? |
| Spa house | Rooms inside the spa, treatments under one roof | Wellness or treatment stay? Minimum length? |
| Apartment | Own kitchenette, often in a historic house | Where do I park? How are keys handed over? |
| Private room (ubytování v soukromí) | A room or flat with local people | Does the host live on site? Is the tourist tax paid separately? |
| Cottage / farmstead | A whole house in a nearby village | Heating, cleaning, linen, distance to a shop |
| Hotel | At least 10 rooms and meals | Stars: is it certified? |
The difference between a guesthouse and a hotel under the official classification is explained in Guesthouse, hotel, apartment; the difference between a chata and a chalupa in Chata or chalupa?.
Seven questions before you book
- Where exactly does the car go? In the core this is the most common problem.
- Is there somewhere to lock up bikes? Almost everyone cycles here. Ask for a lockable room, not “the yard”.
- Do the windows face the square or the courtyard? In summer there is music on the square into the evening.
- Breakfast – when and where? Smaller guesthouses do not always serve it.
- Dog – how much and where is it allowed? Rules vary by establishment and even by room.
- Mosquitoes. This is no joke – ask about window screens. A fishpond landscape simply has mosquitoes in the warm months.
- Cancellation terms. Especially in autumn, when fish-harvest dates are only announced in mid-September.
Tourist tax
The tourist tax (poplatek z pobytu) is collected by your host on behalf of the municipality. The Act on local fees sets an upper limit of CZK 50 per person for each day of the stay begun, excluding the day of arrival. The actual rate, when it is due and any exemptions are set by the municipality in a generally binding ordinance (obecně závazná vyhláška). So when you compare prices, check them with the tax included.
In future, eSOUBYTOVÁNÍ may also list individual places to stay. They will be clearly labelled, with verified information on dogs, bikes and parking, and always with direct contact details for the host. There are none here today.
