Why Třeboň works with children

  • Short distances. The square, the Svět fishpond and the spa park are all within a kilometre of each other.
  • Flat ground. A balance bike, a child’s bike and a bike trailer can all manage the whole loop round Svět.
  • Water in summer and winter. A beach outdoors, pools indoors.

Outdoors

The beach at the Opatovický fishpond

On the northern edge of the fishpond there is a holiday centre with a restaurant and a small beach, about a kilometre from the centre. There is another beach at Doubí.

Cesta kolem Světa

A loop of roughly 11 km through a park, a peat bog and pine forest. You can shorten it – the Svět dam on its own is a 1.4 km walk.

The little train

In season, a sightseeing road train runs from Lázně Aurora across the Svět dam and past the Schwarzenberg Tomb to the square. Check departure times locally – they change.

Birdwatching

The Třeboň area is a bird protection area. Binoculars and a bird guide turn a walk along a dam into an expedition.

Where to stay with children

  • Near Aurora – pools round the corner and a park, but further from the square.
  • An apartment with a kitchenette – your own routine for breakfast and dinner.
  • A farmstead nearby – animals and space, but you need a car or bikes.

What to ask: a cot, a high chair, a stair gate, window screens (mosquitoes), and whether the room is big enough for an extra bed. A general overview is in Staying with children.

48 hours: Třeboň

A slow pace, water, evenings on the square and one morning at the spa.

Friday

  1. Arrival

By train to Třeboň main station or the Třeboň lázně stop; by car on road 24 from České Budějovice. From either, the square is a ten- to fifteen-minute walk.

  2. Dinner near the square

Masarykovo náměstí and its arcades. Look for carp on the menu – “Třeboňský kapr” (Třeboň carp) has been an EU protected geographical indication since 2007.

  3. The Svět dam at dusk≈ 1 km

The dam of the Svět fishpond is a kilometre from the square and 1,400 m long. In the evening it is at its quietest.

Saturday

  1. Breakfast

If you are staying at a guesthouse, ask in advance whether breakfast is served on Saturdays too – at smaller places it is not a given.

  2. Cycling round Svět≈ 11 km

The “Cesta kolem Světa” loop (literally “round the world”) is roughly 11 km, through a park, a peat bog and pine forest. Flat – anyone can manage it.

  3. Lunch

South-east side of Svět: the Schwarzenberg Tomb in the park is just a few minutes from the dam.

  4. The spa

Bertiny lázně and Lázně Aurora also sell shorter wellness stays and day entry. Book your slot in advance.

  5. Regent Brewery

A brewery founded in 1379. After dark it runs tours by candle and torchlight – check the dates on the brewery’s website.

Sunday

  1. The château and its park

The Renaissance château on Masarykovo náměstí is managed by the National Heritage Institute. Tours usually run Tuesday to Sunday.

  2. Rožmberk from the dam≈ 6 km

The largest fishpond in Czechia, with a 2,355 m dam. About 6 km north of Třeboň, easy to reach by bike.

  3. Departure

By train via Veselí nad Lužnicí, or on the direct fast train to Prague.

Showing plan: For two.

How we chose

  • We wrote about Třeboň because it works as a base for a stay: there is somewhere to sleep, something to do on foot or by bike, and a way to get there.
  • Facts such as areas, dates and rules come from official bodies and Wikipedia. Each one is in the source list below, with the date we last checked it.
  • Stay DNA and the “Know before you go” panel are our editorial estimates, compared with the other places in the atlas. They are not measurements or visitor ratings.
  • We name no individual hosts, and nobody pays to be included.
