Krkonoše – the Giant Mountains – are not one place. Špindlerův Mlýn and Pec are busy resorts, Rokytnice and Harrachov the quieter west, Janské Lázně a spa town in the mountains. And the huts on the ridges are a world of their own.

Mountain huts
In Krkonoše, mountain chalets are called boudy. They stand on the ridges and slopes, often far from any road. Before you book a bouda:
- How do I get there in winter? Some can only be reached by snowcat or snowmobile.
- Where do I leave the car? In Pec, parking is banned outside designated car parks.
- Is half board included? On the ridges there is usually nowhere else to go.
Getting there
- By train to Vrchlabí, Trutnov or on the Pojizerský Pacifik (Martinice v Krkonoších – Rokytnice nad Jizerou). Harrachov is served by the Zubačka from Tanvald, the steepest railway in Czechia.
- The Sněžka cable car from Pec: a two-section gondola via Růžová hora, about 15 minutes’ ride. It depends on the wind – bikes are not carried.
With a dog
In Krkonoše National Park (KRNAP) dogs may not run loose – they must stay within reach and under command; the park administration recommends a lead, particularly near pastures with livestock. On the Sněžka cable car a dog must wear both a lead and a muzzle. On the Polish side of the mountains a lead is compulsory.

How we chose
- Krkonoše is a tourist area, not an administrative region, so it has no official border. We draw it as an area around one reference point.
- Facts such as areas, dates and rules come from official bodies and Wikipedia. Each one is in the source list below, with the date we last checked it.
- Stay DNA and the “Know before you go” panel are our editorial estimates, compared with the other places in the atlas. They are not measurements or visitor ratings.
- We name no individual hosts, and nobody pays to be included.
