Vysočina has no big mountains and no famous resorts. It has gentle hills, fishponds, villages of timber houses and three UNESCO sites – and, above all, a silence you will no longer find elsewhere in Czechia.

Where to go

  • Žďárské vrchy – a protected landscape area since 1970, 709 km², altitudes 492–836 m. The highest point is Devět skal (“Nine Rocks”). Fishponds, peat bogs, villages of timber houses.
  • Zelená hora near Žďár nad Sázavou – the Pilgrimage Church of St John of Nepomuk, UNESCO 1994.
  • Telč – a Renaissance square, UNESCO 1992.
  • Třebíč – the Jewish Quarter and St Procopius’ Basilica, UNESCO 2003.

Where to stay

Vysočina is best experienced from a country cottage or log house in a village, or by glamping. At the start of 2023, Vysočina had the highest concentration of glamping sites in Czechia. Towns such as Telč and Žďár are better for day trips.

Without a car, the Vysočina countryside is hard to reach. If you are coming by train, stay in Žďár, Nové Město na Moravě or Telč.

Winter

The area around Nové Město na Moravě has the most groomed cross-country trails in Vysočina. Vysočina Arena hosted the Biathlon World Championships in 2013 and 2024 and, in good conditions, links up with the touring cross-country loops.

    How we chose

    • Vysočina is a tourist area, not an administrative region, so it has no official border. We draw it as an area around one reference point.
    • Facts such as areas, dates and rules come from official bodies and Wikipedia. Each one is in the source list below, with the date we last checked it.
    • Stay DNA and the “Know before you go” panel are our editorial estimates, compared with the other places in the atlas. They are not measurements or visitor ratings.
    • We name no individual hosts, and nobody pays to be included.
